Duke Health Center at North Duke Street

The outpatient physical therapy department at North Duke Street provides physical therapy services for patients with orthopedic related issues. The medical center at North Duke Street is staffed with orthopedic surgeons that perform arthroscopic and joint replacement surgeries in the shoulder and knee. The orthopedic group also has a foot and ankle specialist, as well as a hand specialist.

Our therapists work closely with the orthopedists from this group, and with doctors throughout the community to maximize patient outcomes.

The physical therapy staff includes a board certified specialist, a certified hand therapist (CHT), and a therapist who is certified in biomechanical assessment of the golf swing. All patients are taken through a comprehensive evaluation and are provided with a patient specific plan of care with a goal of increasing patients' functional abilities. We offer a variety of treatments to accomplish these goals; strengthening, flexibility, patient education, home and gym exercises routines, manual therapy including soft tissue massage and joint mobilization, gait and balance training, and modalities such as spinal traction, ultrasound and electrical stimulation.

Orthopedic Rehabilitation

Spine Rehabilitation

Individualized assessment of neck and back injuries with treatments that incorporate lumbar and spinal stabilization, back school, stretching, strengthening, manual therapy and modalities such as traction when appropriate. Types of injuries include disc herniations, degenerative disc disease, sciatica, post operative rehabilitation, and sprains and strains related to work, motor vehicle accidents, or general overuse activities.

Post operative rehabilitation

We work closely with our orthopedic surgeons in rehabilitating patients after joint replacement surgery, as well as after arthroscopic and open surgeries of the shoulders, knees, and feet.

Non-operative treatment

Treatment of sprains and strains, tendonitis and arthritic conditions.

Individualized assessment

Patients are taken through detailed biomechanical evaluations to establish appropriate goals towards restoring each patient’s function, be it recreational sports, household activities, or returning an individual to work.

Hand Therapy

One-on-One evaluation and treatment of orthopedic and nerve pathologies is performed by a certified hand therapist (CHT), and is available on both a scheduling and walk-in basis.

Treatment includes hands-on therapy for the fabrication of braces and splints for post-operative and non-operative treatment of injuries in the forearm, wrist and hand including:
  • fractures
  • sprains/strains
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • and various traumas.

Patients are supervised closely by both the hand therapist and the hand surgeon, Dr. Julian Aldridge, in attempting to maximize the patient’s function.
